Portable Nexus Crystal

Systema Delenda Est

Portable Nexus crystals are rare, high-rank devices that extend the reach of the System’s organized forces beyond individual worlds. Their decisive importance is practical rather than ceremonial: they allow Azoths to venture into the nothingness between worlds, carry support where ordinary portal access is insufficient, and assemble a response to Cato’s expanding campaigns.

Definition and Function

A portable Nexus crystal is a transport-enabling device associated with the Nexus network. The evidence identifies it as a piece of equipment carried by Azoths, whose rank allows them to operate in the empty space beyond inhabited worlds. Unlike ordinary lower-rank support, the crystal makes off-world movement possible in environments where Cato’s operations have broken the normal assumptions of System travel.

The device is therefore not merely a portable version of a fixed Nexus. It changes the operational geography of the System. A world can remain connected to the wider conflict even when the combatants cannot simply pass through ordinary portals or move armies directly from one planet to another. The crystal supplies the mobility required to cross the intervening void and turn scattered defenders into a force capable of responding across multiple fronts.

Use in the Crusade Against Cato

Muar identifies portable Nexus crystals as a central requirement for the Crusade against Cato. While discussing the need to align the factions against Cato’s expansion, he argues that more Bismuths and Azoths must be willing to venture out with the crystals, with Alums desired as well. His remark places the devices inside a larger mobilization problem: resistance requires not only conviction, quests, or rank, but also the means to leave a protected world and enter the spaces where Cato operates.

The crystals become especially important during the defense of Rikel. As the annexation timer approaches its end, Muar summons selected high-ranking members of the Five Gods Alliance rather than issuing an immediate general call. The arriving Azoths are the ones equipped with portable Nexus crystals, and this equipment is what lets them venture into the nothingness beyond worlds under Cato’s control. Lower ranks can provide ground support, but they cannot perform the same strategic function; ordinary Coppers and Silvers cannot even reach Rikel under the circumstances.

The division of labor around Rikel makes the device’s social value clear. Azoths carrying portable Nexus crystals distribute themselves around the planet, while lower-ranked personnel remain on the surface as support. Each Azoth also receives a consumable offering divine protection and additional resurrections, because the crystal places its bearer in the path of Cato’s orbital weapons and other unpredictable attacks. Mobility does not remove danger; it makes participation in the larger war possible at a price.

Strategic and Political Consequences

Portable Nexus crystals are a limiting resource in the anti-Cato coalition. Muar does not treat them as equipment that can simply be issued to anyone who volunteers. The resistance needs more high-ranked individuals willing and able to use them, and even the recruitment of Alums is difficult because locating them is itself a problem. The resulting shortage helps explain why the coalition cannot instantly form a universal response, even when Cato’s annexations make the danger obvious.

The crystals also reinforce the hierarchy of the System. Access to the wider theater depends on rank, and rank determines who can carry the device effectively. Lower-ranked populations may be essential to local defense, but the strategic initiative belongs to Azoths and the still rarer Alums. In this way, a material transport constraint becomes a political constraint: the factions must rely on a small class of operatives whose mobility allows them to coordinate resistance beyond their home worlds.

Their importance extends beyond a single battle. Muar’s plan is to travel farther inward through the System, preparing worlds to recognize Cato’s presence, identify his mortal agents, and defend themselves. Portable Nexus crystals are the means by which high-ranking agents can move through that widening theater. They support the Crusade’s expansion from a local defense into a system-wide campaign, even as Cato’s own industrial expansion makes every delay more dangerous.

Significance

The portable Nexus crystal embodies the tension between System integration and the fragmentation of worlds. The System presents itself as a connected order, yet its defenders still require specialized devices and exceptional rank to cross the spaces separating one world from another. The crystal makes that contradiction visible: universal administration depends on scarce, unevenly distributed mobility.

At the same time, the device gives the resistance a counterweight to Cato’s distributed industrial strategy. Cato cannot move forces through portals in a meaningful way, but his hundreds of worlds manufacture their own armies and weapons. The coalition answers with a different form of scale, sending a small number of highly ranked crystal-bearers across the void to coordinate local defenses. Portable Nexus crystals thus function as instruments of concentration within a war otherwise defined by dispersion, allowing isolated worlds to become parts of a common front without erasing the dangers and inequalities that keep them apart.
